Photographs & Memories

… the title of one of my favourite songs ever, let alone one of the most poignant, by Jim Croce. What can I say? Photographs and memories are inter-twined and mean everything to me. I shall never fathom the ability to capture a moment in time but I shall be eternally grateful to the person who did!

My mother was not a great one for photographs but the random ones she did take she threw into a drawer as though unimportant. No dates, no indication as to subject or setting, as the years went by their relevance was lost. I vowed that I would never do the same …

True to my word, I documented my life and the lives of my children capturing each momentous moment for posterity. I not only wrote on the back of every photograph but I placed each in an album with added comment below – often funny! A mammoth task, these albums remain my most cherished possessions and ones for which I would walk through fire …

Sadly, the advent of digital cameras, reflecting a changing, less thoughtful world, meant multiple versions of every moment none of which would see beyond a computer screen let alone a photograph album. My film camera called time stepping aside for the memory stick – and I am ashamed to say I acquiesced. Losing many years, as it were, I finally got myself a digital camera in 2016 and I am not letting these memories sit on a stick! Now on first-name terms with the staff in Jessops, I am endeavouring, once more, to make up albums of my photographs and memories – moments in time which are totally priceless …
